DC mayor Tony Williams may know how to manage a big city. But Mayor Bow Tie is clearly having a harder time figuring out how to blog.

tonywilliams.jpg Williams launched his blog a week and a half ago (First entry: "What Button Do I Push?"). Since then he has posted exactly once. That item consisted mostly of house cleaning, including a blogging pledge to be "cogent and consistent." Hey Tony: How about frequent?

The amazing thing is Williams' pace runs above average, as far as elected-official bloggers go. Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown posts to his blog about once a month. Tsk, Tsk, Mayor Moonbeam! (Thanks, though, for posting the cute wedding photo! jerryanne-5.jpg )

Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen, meanwhile, would be lucky to work the conession stand at the Blog Hall of Shame. He launched Phil Blog in May, with an outright admission that someone from his staff ghost-wrote the first entry ("11:10p My first blog entry, ever (the one on 5/9 was not from me)"). Since then, Bredesen has posted twice. Or someone claiming to be Bredesen. We don't really know.

By taking up blogging, all these pols are trying to show that they're hip and cool. By not understanding blogging -- the immediacy, the authenticity -- they've only proven that they're not.
