7 Killed in Chicago Shootings

A spasm of violence hit the city during the holiday weekend.

The authorities said Sunday that a 7-year-old boy who was celebrating the Fourth of July with his family was among three people who were shot and killed overnight in Chicago during eight hours in which more than two dozen other people suffered gunshot wounds.

The child, Amari Brown, was shot after someone opened fire Saturday just before midnight in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, the police said. He was struck in the right side of his chest and was pronounced dead early Sunday at Stroger Hospital, officials said.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Sunday at a news conference that the boy’s father was a “ranking gang member” and had been the intended target. No one was in custody.

The boy’s death was part of a spasm of violence that hit the city during the holiday weekend.
