Missing From Tennessee Governor's School Safety Task Force: Democrats

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam announced his school safety committee members on Monday, but the 16-member group is lacking a Democrat.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam announced his school safety committee members on Monday, but the 16-member group is lacking a Democrat.

The omission drew the ire of Tennessee Democrats after the afternoon announcement, as they said school safety is an issue that deserves bipartisan consideration.

“Not only did the governor set up a solid Republican task force on an issue where bipartisan consensus is sorely needed, he went out of his way to exclude voices who are committed to evidence-based solutions to prevent gun violence," said Sen. Lee Harris, D-Memphis, the Senate minority leader.

Haslam has tasked the committee to review the policies, procedures and process of school safety across the state, as well as to consider communication and collaboration among law enforcement, educators and mental health professionals.
