Despite Town Clerks' Opposition, Vermont Governor Signs Voter Registration Bill

One concern about the new law is the lack of a requirement for people registering to provide identification.

Vermonters will be able to register to vote at any polling place on Election Day beginning in 2017 under a bill signed into law Monday by Gov. Peter Shumlin. Shumlin approved the bill despite ongoing concerns expressed by city and town clerks who oversee most elections. The clerks cited a few past cases of people voting in multiple places on the same day and a fear that problem would spread.

Currently, residents can register to vote up until the Wednesday before an election.

Some clerks testified against the bill. Legislators have asked the clerks to resolve concerns with Secretary of State Jim Condos during the next 19 months.
