The opioid crisis is an ongoing problem that continues to plague Americans, including many here on Delmarva.

But on Thursday, Delaware officials took a stand to protect some of the opioid crisis's most vulnerable victims--infants born into or exposed to drugs.

At Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Gov. John Carney signed what's called "Aiden's Law," which aims to prevent infant deaths by providing mothers and infants the proper care needed after dealing with drugs.

The law is named after Aiden Hundley, an infant born to a drug addicted mother at Beebe Healthcare, who later died from neglect and abuse from his parents.

The new law aims to make sure no other child suffers the same fate as Aiden.

Bridget Buckaloo, executive director of women's health services at Beebe Healthcare, said her staff cared for Aiden at the hospital extensively.
