New State Residents Statistics, Demographic Data

An estimated 8.9 million people moved to new states in 2012, a figure that hasn't changed much in recent years.

The Census Bureau's population data indicates 7.1 million Americans moved to a different state within the U.S., while 1.8 million others moved to the country from abroad.

The following graphic shows demographic and population statistics for each state's new residents in 2012. It should be noted that this data does not account for those moving within a state, births, deaths or net migration totals. Figures refer to combined totals for those moving domestically and abroad unless otherwise indicated.
