Minority Children: State Populations

Many states have growing populations of minority children, with minorities now accounting for the majority of babies born in the U.S.

The demographic shift has been particularly significant in the southwest. Minority children under age 10 currently make up the majority of the under age-10 population in 12 states and the District of Columbia, according to census data.

An influx of Hispanic residents, in particular, has altered the demographics of many states. Even many rural areas, traditionally white, are becoming more diverse.

Governing compiled 2011 census population estimates for those under age 10 into the map below. Dark green states have the highest percentages of minorities, either non-whites or those of Hispanic ethnicity.
