Rianna P. Starheim is a writer who supports the National Institute of Justice's Sentinel Events Initiative and its Law Enforcement Advancing Data and Science program as a contractor. She is helping to launch the Institute’s Notes from the Field publication series, which will profile leading American practitioner voices on issues including civil disturbance and the opioid crisis.
Prior to joining NIJ, Starheim directed a communications company in Afghanistan, leading multimedia projects with agencies including USAID, the World Bank, the European Commission, and the Afghan Palace and Ministry of Finance. She writes frequently on human-rights issues for publications including Foreign Policy, Pacific Standard, New America and the Virginia Quarterly Review. A graduate of Dartmouth College, she volunteers as an emergency medical technician.
