Mick Cornett, a Republican, served from 2004 to 2018 as mayor of Oklahoma City, Okla., and is a past president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Honored in 2010 as a Governing Public Official of the Year, Cornett is the author, with Jayson White, of The Next American City: the Big Promise of Our Midsize Metros, published in 2018.

Cornett entered politics after a 20-year career in broadcast journalism. In 1999, he left local television and started his own business while also returning to the University of Oklahoma as a journalism professor. He produced, wrote and directed the award-winning documentary Oklahoma City: the Boom, the Bust and the Bomb.

In addition to his leadership role with the Conference of Mayors, Cornett has served on the Urban Parks Advisory Board of the U.S. Department of the Interior and in leadership roles with Community Leaders of America, Building America's Future, Smart Growth America and others. He earned a degree in journalism at the University of Oklahoma and an MBA from New York University.
