Don Macke, who has nearly 40 years of community economic development and policy experience, is the co-founder of the Lincoln, Neb.-based Center for Rural Entrepreneurship and director of the center's entrepreneurial communities solution area. He also is active in the center's community development philanthropy solution area.

In addition, Macke is senior vice president of LOCUS Impact Investing, a nationwide social enterprise launched by the center and Virginia Community Capital. He holds a master's degree in economics and a bachelor's degree in environmental science, both from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

They have valuable assets that make them fertile ground for startups. To tap those assets, they need to build entrepreneurial ecosystems.
