Telework Data for Metro Areas

Numbers of workers who work from home vary across regions. See data showing the prevalence of telecommuting by metro area.

Working from home, while still relatively uncommon, has been gaining in popularity in recent years. Recent estimates from the Census Bureau suggest just over 5 percent of the U.S. workforce primarily worked from home in 2017.

Select an area below to view telecommuting data by metro area. Numbers reflect any workers who worked from home, regardless of whether they're employed at a company or run their own business. It's also worth noting that remote workers typically don't always work from home. Estimates shown only represent those who reported they usually worked from home.

About the Data

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey asks respondents to report how they "usually" got to work over the past week. Those who reported working from home (table B08301) includes individuals owning their own businesses rather than telecommuting, but it does not reflect most workers who telecommute only part of the time. The Census Bureau's 2005 ACS survey (not shown) did not include the group quarters population.
