Quick question: What image comes to mind when you hear the word democracy? Many people might imagine voting or the town hall meeting, an age-old relic of public participation. But town hall meetings -- which, in early times, excluded more people than they included -- no longer jive with modern and diverse communities that are often microcosms of the world.

In a guest video commentary for the City Accelerator, Ceasar McDowell, President of the Interaction Institute for Social Change and Professor of the Practice of Community Development at MIT, argues that innovation is needed to build new infrastructures and processes to make democracy work for an increasingly complex, mobile and technology-driven public.
