Mary Stone holds the Hugh Culverhouse Endowed Chair of Accountancy at the University of Alabama. She is a former member of the Financial Accounting Foundation, the Financial Accounting Standards Board's Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Council. She is a past president of the American Accounting Association and of Beta Alpha Psi.

Stone has received the American Accounting Association's Outstanding Educator Award, the University of Alabama's Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award, and the Alabama Society of CPAs' Outstanding Educator Award. She has published more than 40 articles, a number of them dealing with pension accounting and reporting.

A Florida CPA, Stone received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Central Florida University.
