Elissa Gertler has been the planning and development director of Metro, the regional government and metropolitan planning organization serving greater Portland, Ore., since 2014, after serving as deputy planning and development director for three years.

Previously, she served as director of public and government affairs for Clackamas County, Ore., and as economic development manager for the Portland Development Commission. She holds a bachelor's degree in urban planning from Rutgers University and studied creative writing at the University of California at Santa Cruz.
