1,500 Stores in 8 States: Walgreens Will Soon Sell CBD Products

Walgreens will soon offer CBD products in select stores, the company announced Thursday.

Nearly 1,500 stores in eight states -- Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, New Mexico, South Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee and Vermont -- will begin selling the Cannabidiol products.

CBD is a common component found in marijuana, along with THC. Different from THC, which gives users a feeling of being "high," CBD has been commonly known for its calming effects.

Products for sale will include topical creams, patches and sprays that do not include THC, Walgreens said.

Walgreens' announcement comes just a week after pharmacy chain CVS announced it would begin selling CBD products in select stores.

"This product offering is in line with our efforts to provide a wider range of accessible health and wellbeing products and services to best meet the needs and preferences of our customers," Walgreens said in a statement.

Walgreens was unable to provide any further information as to when products would go on sale or if they would be available on the website.

While CBD is legal in the U.S., little is known about exactly how the component affects people. Many have praised CBD for its calming effects, and say they gain benefits from it -- but the FDA says there is not enough research yet on it to know its true, long-term effects. The FDA has cracked down on the sale of CBD products sold as dietary supplements and in food or drinks, saying more research is needed.

Last month, the New York City Health Department banned bars and restaurants from selling CBD as an additive in food and drinks.
