Stacey Abrams will deliver the Democratic response to President Trump's State of the Union, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Tuesday.

Abrams has been seen as a rising star in the party since serving as the Democratic leader of the Georgia state General Assembly. Last year, she gained national attention as she ran for governor in the Peach State, losing a tight race to Republican Brian Kemp.

"I plan to deliver a vision for prosperity and equality, where everyone in our nation has a voice and where each of those voices is heard," Abrams said in a statement.

Trump's State of the Union, originally meant to take place Tuesday, was rescheduled for Feb. 5 after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) suggested the President postpone the annual address during the partial government shutdown.

"Democrats are thrilled that Stacy Abrams will be delivering the Democratic response to the State of the Union," Pelosi said in a statement. "Her electrifying message of courage, perseverance and hope reinvigorated our nation and our politics, and continues to inspire millions of Americans in every part of the country."

Schumer applauded Abrams as a leader on voting rights.

"Three weeks ago, I called Stacey Abrams and asked her to deliver the response, I was very delighted when she agreed," Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Tuesday. "She is just a great spokesperson. She is an incredible leader."

A group backed by the 45-year-old filed a federal lawsuit this month alleging Georgia deprived many low-income people and minorities of their voting rights during the 2018 election as Kemp was serving as secretary of state. After a long dispute, Kemp won the governorship.

Senate Democrats are urging Abrams to run for the Senate in 2020 against Republican Sen. David Perdue.
