From rebuilding downtown to preserving neighborhoods in Queens, the city has a lot of challenges as it prepares to handle a million new residents in only the next couple decades --- and sprawl isn't an option.
According to the story, city planners will take an approach that blends the philosophies of Robert Moses (who put in towers and highways that sliced up neighborhoods) and Jane Jacobs (who advocated saving neighborhoods at all costs).
New York's challenges are, obviously, on a different scale from most cities. But many of the basic questions it faces are the same questions on the desks of city planners across the country.
