Guns, Liquor and Cash Missing from Florida Police Department's Evidence Room

A Florida Department of Law Enforcement audit finds 7,877 items, including 19 guns and 44 caches of seized narcotics, have gone missing from Sweetwater, Fla. evidence rooms since 2010.

A South Florida police department says that more than 7,000 items, including guns, money and liquor, have gone missing from its evidence room.

Acting Sweetwater Police Chief Placido Diaz told local media during a news conference Wednesday that an audit by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement found that 7,877 items that should have been inside the evidence room are missing.

Diaz says there is no indication that missing evidence has harmed any prosecutions, but the findings place future cases in jeopardy.

Sweetwater Mayor Orlando Lopez said at the news conference that police personnel most likely removed or stole the property, as nobody else had access to it.
