Unemployment Rates Remain Unchanged: State Rankings

Unemployment rates continue to remain steady for much of the country, with the most recent national seasonally-adjusted rate at 9.1, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Nevada’s unemployment rate of 13.4 for August remains the highest in the country. The state’s slumping housing market has cut into construction jobs and fewer Americans with expendable incomes are supporting tourism in Las Vegas and other areas.

The state’s unemployment rate hasn’t dipped below 10.0 since January 2009.

Rounding out the top five unemployment rates for August were California (12.1), Michigan (11.2), Washington, D.C., (11.1) and South Carolina (11.1).

Of course, the figures don’t include many part-time workers and those who have quit trying to find employment.
