Indiana State Treasurer and Republican Senate Candidate Richard Mourdock surprised everyone yesterday when he applauded the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Most surprised of all may be the Justices of the Supreme Court, as the ruling may not come until next week.
In order to be prepared for the ruling, Mourdock prepared the video beforehand, but it was accidentally posted on his website, Politico reported. “Well, we’ve had our brief moment of celebration, because the Supreme Court ruled that Obamacare is, in fact, unconstitutional. It’s what many of us argued all along," Mourdock said in the video.
In fact, to make sure all his bases were covered, Mourdock prepared four videos for four different rulings. In addition to the one applauding the ruling, Mourdock released one condemning the Supreme Court for upholding the ACA’s constitutionality, one discussing what will happen in a split decision if only the Individual Mandate is struck down, and one in the case that the Supreme Court’s ruling did not actually decide the constitutionality of the law.
While the Mourdock campaign took the videos off the website, they are now posted on Youtube. The campaign explained that they were just trying to cover their bases. “Like the vast majority of Hoosiers, Richard hopes the Supreme Court strikes down Obamacare, which our opponent Joe Donnelly dutifully supported. But as the Boy Scouts say, 'be prepared,’” said Mourdock spokesman Chris Conner in an e-mail to Politico.
