The first race through the Southern California city’s streets was held in 1975 and is credited with sparking the town’s transformation. Once a collection of dilapidated and abandoned buildings, Long Beach is now a waterside tourist attraction.
Preparation for the two-mile race begins in February. By this weekend, workers will have installed 14 million pounds of concrete blocks, four miles of fencing, six pedestrian bridges plus grandstands.
