Baltimore Police Chief Bealefeld to Retire in August

Baltimore Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld announced Thursday night that he will retire after 31 years with the police force, reports The Baltimore Sun. He alerted Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake of his intent in a resignation letter dated May 1.

Bealefeld joined the Baltimore Police Department in 1981, working his way up the rungs to eventually lead the department for the last five years.

The Sun reports that there will be a nationwide search to replace Bealefeld, who will stay in his current position until August and assist with the transition.

Governing featured Bealefeld in May 2009 for his investment in closed-circuit television cameras to monitor and police Baltimore.
