In all, $928.5 million was awarded for fiscal year 2011 transit improvements. Projects include new buses, equipment, garages and bike programs for various municipalities and transportation authorities.
The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority was the top recipient, receiving $112.6 million for new vehicles, bus radios and facility upgrades.
The Federal Transit Administration awarded the grants after reviewing applications for 839 proposed projects.
In a press release, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood also called on Congress to pass the America Jobs Act, which would invest additional funds in transportation projects.
