Democrats also retained two state Senate seats, giving the party a 32-to-31 numerical advantage over Republicans in the state’s upper house, though one Democrat who caucuses with Republicans will continue to deny them a working majority.
The Assembly pickup was made by Steven Stern, who will represent the 10th District after defeating his Republican foe by an 18-point margin. In 2016 Hillary Clinton narrowly carried the district, but Republicans had represented it in the legislature since 1979 and did not go into Tuesday thinking they would lose it.
