The state Senate is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a bill that would prohibit those under 18 from using a tanning booth unless they have a prescription from a physician.
If the measure becomes law Rhode Island would have some of the nation's strictest rules on teen tanning.
Many states require parental consent for minors to use tanning salons. Rhode Island now requires a parent to accompany minors using a tanning salon.
Last year California became the first state to prohibit minors from using tanning booths with or without parental permission.
