New Electronic Campaign Filing Lauded in Virginia

The Virginia State Board of Elections says the first campaign finance reporting deadline using a new electronic filing application was a success.

The Virginia State Board of Elections says the first campaign finance reporting deadline using a new electronic filing application was a success.

Officials say this week was the first deadline using the new Committee Electronic Tracking System, or COMET. Candidates and committees who were required to submit campaign finance reports on Monday used the new system. And reports submitted using the new system are now viewable through the State Board of Elections.

Board secretary Donald Palmer says he expects COMET will be a "game-changer" for state campaign finance disclosure agencies across the country.

The new web application replaces a Virginia system that was released in 1999 as one of the country's first e-filing software systems developed by a state.
