Does Hollywood have a water cooler? If so, someone should put up this quote from Martin Sheen somewhere near it, for all the celebrity political wannabes to see. "I'm just not qualified.  You're mistaking celebrity for credibility," he said, after being asked to run for the Senate in his native Ohio.

This is not to denigrate everyone who launches a political career after stints in the movies or on television or in music or sports. It's more of a talking point for stars who think celebrity is what qualifies them for public office.

Does anybody remember that commercial from yesteryear, starring "Marcus Welby, MD," a television doctor played by actor Robert Young? "I'm not a doctor but I play one on TV," he says, while wearing a lab coat and hawking aspirin. He was deemed by advertisers more qualified to sell painkillers than, say, Maxwell Smart from "Get Smart" or Samantha from "Bewitched."

Martin Sheen knows better. He's the president. Well, he plays one on TV. But that's just not enough.

Got that, everybody?
