I've just completed an initial update of the state technology officials for Governing's Sourcebook and the results show that slowly more women are moving into high-ranking tech positions. Of the more than 250 tech officials listed this year, 25.7% are women.

That figure might not sound too impressive, but it does represent a smaller gender gap than five years ago. In the 2001 Sourcebook, 21.5% of the tech officials were women. It also compares favorably to most top elected offices, although I'd guess women make up a bigger share of other types of appointed positions.

In two states in particular, women hold lots of top tech positions: Pennsylvania and Virginia.
