A promising innovation? That seems to be what Nevada thinks. In last month's issue of Governing, my colleague Josh Goodman examined how state local governments eager to maximize federal dollars (and political power) are approaching the upcoming census.

Leave it to Nevada to come up with something different. It's tapping some of the stars of the United States' most popular new sport -- ultimate fighting -- to tout the benefits of civic participation. According to the AP, the UFC (that's the Ultimate Fighting Championship, to those of you who aren't in the know) is producing ads that feature fighters, a ring girl, and ... Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller.
