There's still a lot of opposition to banning smoking at bars. Just ask any member of the puffing masses standing outside pubs in a growing number of cities.

But is smoking-ban angst deep enough for a Minneapolis bar owner to win her way to the Minnesota governor's mansion? Sue Jeffers, owner of the Stub & Herbs bar, is about to find out. Jeffers, a longtime critic of Hennepin County's smoking ban, announced for the governor's race the other night at her bar. In an unintentionally ironic statement, she says: "People are ready for a breath of fresh air in Minnesota politics."

Jeffers hopes to win the (surprise!) Libertarian Party's nomination. As MN Politics Guru points out on the Minnesota Politics blog, "she seems to be a single-issue candidate, and it's an issue that most people don't really agree with." But before you count her out, remember that Minnesota has a history of third-party candidates riding waves of angst to victory.
