Scooped in Beantown

Editors at the Boston Herald have a hunch as to why their rivals at the Boston Globe have a way of busting up the Herald's scoops. The Herald thinks that city hall staffers are tipping off the Globe. The Herald is so peeved, reports Boston Magazine, that reporters will no longer ask city hall for comment before they run an exclusive. "We feel very strongly that Mayor Menino has been playing games with us," says Herald managing editor Kevin Convey.

It seems the Herald was recently working on a piece about lousy garbage collection in Beantown, and had sought public records that would quantify the problem. The Globe got the story first, however, citing the same records that the Herald had sought. The Herald thinks city hall slipped the Globe the story in an effort to spin it softly.
