As we mentioned yesterday, 20 members of the San Francisco police force were suspended this week for their part in the production of home videos that are racist, sexist and homophobic.

Being a San Francisco native, it reminded me of a notorious incident back in 1984 when members of the vice squad, no less, celebrated policy academy graduation by hiring a prostitute to perform oral sex in a restaurant on a new recruit who was handcuffed to a chair. Five officers were fired over the incident, which reportedly had been inspired by the lame comedy of that year, "Police Academy."

Another officer drew some heat in 1993 for his parody video "Lifestyles of the Poor and Lazy," which depicted housing project tenants and police. It offended some black officers when it was shown at morning roll call, but the tempest blew over pretty quickly. "He wasn't being Cecil B. DeMille, he was making a little joke for the guys at work," Potrero Station Captain Tim Hetrich told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Willie Kennedy, the city's only black supervisor at the time, had been offended by the title and premise of the video, but once she actually saw it declared it simply "boring."

Mayor Gavin Newsom and the force are taking the work of the force's latest auteurs more seriously, since it is apparently offensive enough to violate any reasonable set of harassment standards.
