A needle exchange program in Wilmington could be expanded statewide after Gov. Jack Markell signed legislation Thursday.

A needle exchange program in Wilmington could be expanded statewide after Gov. Jack Markell signed legislation Thursday.

The program allows drug users to turn in used or "dirty" needles and syringes and receive clean replacements. The goal is to stop the spread of infectious diseases like HIV and hepatitis C.

Workers who staff the program also provide the people who visit with information about addiction treatment services.

About 80,000 syringes are exchanged each year.
