astronaut-with-satellite-2.jpg Here in the D.C. area, everyone knows the most rapid growth is occuring out in the exurbs. A list of fast-growing counties without Virginia's Loudoun and Prince William is like a hot dog without ketchup and mustard.

Still, a lot of people around here were startled when the Census Bureau's latest Top Ten list came out recently and two more Virginia counties, places that most folks had never even heard of, turned up on it: King George County and Caroline County. I'm told that these distant provinces are something like 90 miles south of here, closer to Richmond, really. Some inhabitants have reportedly been spotted commuting all the way in to Washington.

The Washington Post explored what life is like out there, past the asteroid belt, in these suburbs of the exurbs. Not all that exotic, it turns out. Actually, the desires of people moving out there sound quite familiar: they want the biggest house for the lowest price. And they seem to not mind driving more in a week than I do in a year. In fact, they seem to enjoy it. But will they still enjoy it ten years from now when more development, shopping centers and traffic come along?
