The Los Angeles Times is reporting that LAPD Chief Bill Bratton plans to announce his resignation later today. Evidently, he's stepping down to head a private security firm. If true, this represents the end of a remarkable run.

Just how remarkable? Check out this series of charts, which appeared in a recent assessment of the department conducted by Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

A few highlights: 83 percent of Angelenos now say the LAPD is doing "a good or excellent job." That's presumably because crime has tumbled. Is that because the LAPD has performed better? Comparisons with neighboring jurisdictions suggest so. It's also interesting to note that use of force has dropped significantly, even as the number of arrests (and arrests resulting in convictions) has soared.
