Republican Bill Bryant is trying to break a three-decade Democratic lock on the governor’s office, but the former port commissioner’s fundraising is lagging behind the GOP’s last three gubernatorial contenders.

Republican Bill Bryant is trying to break a three-decade Democratic lock on the governor’s office, but the former port commissioner’s fundraising is lagging behind the GOP’s last three gubernatorial contenders.

Through the end of May, Bryant had raised about $1.6 million, according to summary reports filed this week with the state Public Disclosure Commission. He’s spent about $1 million and (after subtracting debts) had about $540,000 in the bank.

At this point in the 2012 race, Republican candidate Rob McKenna had pulled in $5.8 million for his gubernatorial campaign. Dino Rossi had raised $5.1 million by this time in 2008, and $2.2 million at this point during his first run for governor in 2004.

Justin Matheson, Bryant’s campaign manager, said he’s not concerned. He noted Rossi and McKenna each had advantages when they ran — McKenna was attorney general and Rossi was a state senator and budget chair.
