New Jersey and Hudson County finally have a deal for a pro soccer stadium in the town of Harrison. And it's a better deal for the public than had once been proposed. According to the Bergen Record, the MetroStars, owned by billionaire Philip Anschutz, will pay the $80 million construction tab themselves. Previously, they had only offered $30 million. The county and city still have to kick in $40 mil for land acquisition and a parking garage.
Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise sounds pleased with the deal. He has every right to. "Five or six years ago, they came to the county and to the city of Harrison, asking if we would build them a soccer stadium," DeGise told the Record. "Five or six years later, we haven't built them a soccer stadium, but we've helped them build their own soccer stadium. And that's the way it should be."
