That's quite a tidy sum. Well, that's how much a San Diego commuter could save by hopping on public transportation instead of driving to work.

A report from the American Public Transportation Association says that the average savings from switching commuting modes is one-third higher than the average amount a household spends on food for a year.

Translated: Taking the bus means free food for a year! Or something like that.

You can see a ranking of the average savings in the top 20 cities. They range from $13,370 in New York down to $8,496 in Pittsburgh. (Hey, that's still a lot of food.)

Unfortunately (?) I already take public transportation or I bike to work. No savings for me...
