Thanks to popular demand, Wal-Mart is going from a one-state pilot program to a 27-state mass rollout of $4 generic drugs. That's $4 a pop for a 30-day supply of several hundred medications for asthma, cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Wal-Mart may be hogging the headlines, but it is not alone. Target is matching its prices and other retailers are following suit. Wegmans Food Markets, which operates 71 stores in five states, will be offering its customers $11.99 for a 90-day supply of some 200 generic medications.

If this ball keeps rolling, even Medicaid's prescription bill might lighten up.
