Dr. Jason Newson, who ran the county's health department, made it his mission to try to promote healthy eating in an area of the U.S. known, according to an Associated Press story, as the "Redneck Riviera." He posted signs such as "French Fries = Thunder Thighs" and "Sweet Tea = Liquid Sugar" outside the health department building where he worked.
When he posted the words, "America Dies on Dunkin'," (as opposed to Dunkin' Donuts actual slogan, "America Runs on Dunkin' ") it did not sit well with a county commissioner and two lawyers -- both of whom own doughnut shops.
Newson no longer is in a position to write any slogans at all. Because he is no longer in his position. The Florida Health Department, which hired him to run the county agency, forced him to remove the doughnut sign and then to resign, he says.
The tall, lean former Army doctor, who admits his writings were provocative, has reapplied for his job. His mission remains to fight obesity.
