Here's an intriguing idea: A blind student at San Francisco State, my beloved alma mater, convinced university officials to install a half-dozen chimes to help sight-impaired students to find their way around campus. It cost them all of $60.

One altruistic student group has already complained about noise pollution, but now it's a bit easier for the blind to get from the student union to the library. Are there other places where chimes could help?
