Wait: Is that a tree on steroids or a cell phone tower? It's usually not hard to tell the difference. As these pictures show, communications equipment masquerading as nature tends to yield bizarre results.

Now a federal appeals court in New York has acknowledged, well, the obvious. The court allowed the city of White Plains' rejection of what judges called a "man-made evergreen." Their opinion noted that tower-trees, far from blending in, are actually so distinctive that everybody notices them: "A similar structure along New York's Hutchinson River Parkway has become a Westchester landmark well-known to area commuters."
