christopherc-2.jpgThere aren't that many openly gay mayors in this country -- only three, according to the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund. That number increased to four last night when Christopher Cabaldon of West Sacramento discussed his sexual orientation as part of his State of the City address.

"The pressure and the stigma and sometimes the all too casual bigotry in this town made it painfully clear when I first ran for office that I could either serve this community or I could be a gay man. But I could not be both," Cabaldon said.

His coming out announcement was carefully planned and was recorded for posterity. A camera crew from Logo, a gay-themed MTV Networks channel, has been following Cabaldon for about a week and will run a documentary about him this summer, reports the Sacramento Bee .
