IL Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed a bill into law yesterday that eliminates dozens of jobs in his state.

It's the latest -- and probably the last -- step in the off-shoring of one of our nation's oldest traditions.

Yes, Blago has shuttered the country's last horse slaughterhouse.

So now what will become of all the old, injured, or useless horses in the U.S.?

"It's great news," said Sue Balla, manager of a horse rescue facility near Elburn. "But it means there are going to be a lot of horses out there needing new homes, and now is the time for all of the people who complained about [the slaughter of horses] to put up or shut up."

I won't hold my breath waiting for families to adopt all the old horses. But who knows?

Anyway, despite slight movement on the issue in Texas, it looks like the U.S. is going to be horse-slaughterhouse-free for a very long time.
