Responding to the "serious public health threat" of the Zika virus, Medicaid will now pay for over-the-counter mosquito repellents when prescribed by a health professional, the state announced Friday.

Previously, over-the-counter insect repellents generally were excluded from Medicaid coverage. But with mounting concerns over the spread of Zika, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently allowed states to cover mosquito repellents for Medicaid recipients.

Zika is spread primarily through a mosquito bite, but also can be sexually transmitted or passed from mother to fetus during pregnancy. No vaccine is available, so the primary method of prevention is mosquito control.
