Two people were killed and at least four others were injured after a shooting Tuesday evening on the University of North Carolina Charlotte campus.

Trystan Andrew Terrell, a 22-year-old history major at UNCC before dropping out this semester, was identified as the suspect by multiple media outlets.

UNCC Police Chief Jeff Baker confirmed that a suspect, who had been armed with a pistol, was taken into custody, but would not identify the alleged shooter.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said they were only looking at a lone shooter.

Baker would not identify if the two people fatally shot, and the four others injured in the shooting, were students at UNC.

The president of the local Alpha Tau Omega fraternity said one of their brothers, Drew Pescaro, was shot and had been hospitalized at Carolinas Medical Center in stable condition, according to the fraternity. Pescaro is a communications student and a video assistant for the school's football team, according to his Facebook.

The shooting began around 5:40 p.m. in a classroom where students were giving presentations, according to WCNC.

"Run, Hide, Fight. Secure yourself immediately," UNC Charlotte's emergency alert system tweeted shortly before 6 p.m.

The school was put on lockdown and police swept the campus building by building, according to officials.

Tuesday was the last day of classes for the spring semester, according to the school calendar. Wednesday is designated a "reading day" for studying before final exams begin. Exams have now been canceled through Sunday.

UNCC librarian Laura McShane told the Charlotte Observer that she heard a "ruckus" through her headphones and immediately shielded seven students in her office and barricaded the door with a table.

"I said if anyone is out there, they would not find us here," she told the newspaper.

All campus activities were canceled, including a scheduled concert by rapper Waka Flocka.

"We are in shock to learn of an active shooter situation on the campus of UNC Charlotte," Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles tweeted. "My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives, those injured, the entire UNCC community and the courageous first responders who sprang into action to help others."

Gov. Roy Cooper called it a "tragic day for Charlotte and this great university."

"We mourn the lives lost and we will all be here to support each other," he tweeted. "I commend the first responders for their quick action and am grateful that the campus is now secure."
