Arkansas’ first Medicaid inspector general said Tuesday he will leave his post July 1 to pursue other opportunities.

Jay Shue was appointed by former Gov. Mike Beebe to head the Medicaid inspector general’s office, which was created July 1, 2013, under Act 1499 of that year.

“Building the Office of Medicaid Inspector General from scratch has been a challenging and rewarding endeavor,” Shue said Tuesday in a news release. “I am confident that a solid foundation has been laid to continue rooting out and preventing Medicaid fraud and abuse going forward.”

The office is tasked with preventing, detecting and investigating fraud, waste and abuse in the state Medicaid program and recovering improperly paid Medicaid funds. Shue said that in the office’s first two years, recovery of improperly paid funds increased from $1.1 million in 2013 to over $3 million in 2015, and referrals for prosecution of Medicaid fraud increased six-fold.
