At Governor's Debate in Indiana, Candidates Spar Over Economy and LGBT Rights

How do you improve a state economy that’s already nearing peak employment?

How do you improve a state economy that’s already nearing peak employment?

Republican Eric Holcomb, Democrat John Gregg and Libertarian Rex Bell offered their answers to a tricky overarching question Monday. The gubernatorial candidates addressed wages, regional cooperation and other economic-themed issues during their first prime-time debate at the University of Indianapolis.

Holcomb argued there’s little reason for change — just for Indiana to "continue to do what we’re doing, on steroids." Holcomb touted the economic policies that Republican Govs. Mitch Daniels and Mike Pence put in place during the past 12 years.

Noting the upcoming 200th anniversary of Indiana's statehood, Holcomb argued that under Republican leadership, "we’ve come further and faster than probably any other 12-year period throughout that 200 years."

Monday’s debate was a slight departure in tone from the tame education debate Sept. 27 at Lawrence North High School. That event, held during the morning in front of high school students, revealed few disagreements. The candidates found less common ground on economic issues.
