In these tough economic times, regional cooperation is key to helping cities and counties cope, local officials at Governing's recent Outlook in the States and Localities conference agreed. GovJobsToday.com, a regional portal for government job listings, is just such an effort. Instead of searching through individual Web sites or visiting government offices, applicants in the Puget Sound region need only go to GovJobsToday.com. Likewise, human-resources managers no longer have to deal with a paper-intensive process that slows hiring. They can easily post job listings, and once a listing closes, screen applicants digitally. Meanwhile, applicants, who are given an identification number once they've created and stored their profiles, can see where they are in the screening process; they also can subscribe to an RSS feed to receive notification of new job postings. Since its launch last month, city human-resources personnel have seen a much larger pool of applicants for each position than they have in the past, and say the savings over time will be significant in terms of reduced recruiting costs and shorter turnaround times to fill positions. The Web portal is overseen by the eCityGov Alliance, an interlocal government agency, and serves the cities of Kenmore, Bothell, Woodinville, Kirkland, Bellevue, Mercer Island, Issaquah, Sammamish and Snoqualmie.
