EPA Carbon Emissions Reduction Targets by State

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced rules to significantly curb carbon dioxide emissions over a number of years.

Proposed rules, which target power plants, would affect some states far more than others. Washington state, for example, would need to reduce its emissions by nearly 72 percent -- more than any other state.

The map below shows the percentage of carbon dioxide (from 2012 levels) each state will have to reduce from its power utilities by 2030, with greater reductions shown in red. EPA data is listed in pounds of carbon dioxide per megawatt hour of electricity generated.
